Entry Doors That Hold in a Hurricane
Impact doors are exterior entry doors tested as a complete unit: slab, frame, glass, hinges, locks and threshold. In a storm, a front door can fail by being blown inward, by its latch letting go, or by debris breaking its glass. A door approved for the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone has passed the same missile and pressure tests that impact windows do, and its approval spells out which lock, hinge and fastener setup it was tested with. For Doral homes, that approval is what the building inspector checks.
Single, double and sidelight setups
Many Doral houses and townhomes have a single front door, sometimes with one or two glass sidelights. Larger homes in gated communities often have double doors or a door with a transom above. Each piece, including every sidelight and transom, must be covered by an approval. When a door is grouped with sidelights, the whole assembly is usually ordered and tested as one unit, which is why changing only the slab is rarely possible in this zone.
Materials
- Fiberglass resists moisture and dents, can be finished to look like wood, and does not rot in humid summers.
- Steel is strong and often lower in cost, but needs its finish kept up where salt air or sprinklers reach it.
- Aluminum and glass suits modern homes with full-lite designs, using laminated glass held in a heavy frame.
Glass inserts in any of these doors must be impact-rated. Decorative glass is available in laminated form.
Swing direction and the threshold
In South Florida, many entry doors open outward, which lets wind pressure push the door against its frame instead of away from it. Inward-swinging impact doors exist, but they need hardware and a threshold built to resist that load. The threshold also has to keep driving rain out. We check the slab height, the step and any landing so that the new sill sheds water away from the house.
Hardware
The approval names the locking system the door was tested with, often a multi-point lock that latches at the top, middle and bottom. Swapping in a different lockset can void that rating. If you want smart locks or keypad entry, we pick a model compatible with the approved hardware before ordering.
Door Options
Common impact entry door setups for Doral houses and townhomes.
Single entry door
The standard 3-foot by 6-foot-8 front door, solid or with an impact glass insert.
Double entry doors
A matched pair for wider openings, with an astragal and locking pins tested as part of the system.
Sidelights
Narrow glass panels beside the door, each impact-rated, to bring light into the entry.
Transoms
A fixed glass panel above the door, useful in homes with tall foyers.
Side and garage-entry doors
Service doors from the garage or side yard, which also count as openings on a wind mitigation inspection.

Typical Impact Door Costs
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Standard (non-impact) front door replacement, installed | $500 to $2,500 and up |
| Standard front door with sidelights, installed | $1,800 to $4,500 |
| Standard front door with sidelights and transom, installed | $1,700 to $3,600 |
| Standard double front doors, installed | $1,500 to $5,000 |
| Each added sidelight, materials and labor | $500 to $1,500 and up |
These are national ranges for standard entry doors from HomeGuide, shown as a baseline. Neutral cost guides do not publish separate ranges for HVHZ impact entry doors, which cost more because of laminated glass, reinforced frames and tested hardware. Your written estimate is the price.
How an Impact Door Install Works
1. Measure the opening
We measure the rough opening, check the slab and landing height, and note swing direction and hardware wishes.
2. Pick the assembly
Door, sidelights and transom are chosen together so the whole unit is covered by one approval.
3. Permit and order
Approvals go into the permit package and the door is ordered to size.
4. Remove and set
The old door and frame come out, the opening is prepared, and the new unit is anchored and sealed at the threshold.
5. Hardware and inspection
Locks are adjusted, weatherstripping checked, and the inspections are completed.

Impact Doors Questions
Can I keep my existing frame and just change the door slab?
In the HVHZ, usually not. The approval covers the slab, frame and hardware as a tested system, so the whole unit is replaced.
Should my front door open in or out?
Outward-opening doors are common in South Florida because wind pushes them into the frame. Inward-opening impact doors are available with the right hardware. Walkway space and steps often decide it.
Can I add a smart lock to an impact door?
Often yes, if the lock fits the tested hardware. We confirm compatibility before ordering so the rating is not affected.
Does the door from the garage need to be impact-rated?
Building code depends on whether it is an exterior opening. For insurance opening-protection credit, all exterior openings typically need protection, so ask your agent how they treat it.
